What Char Dham Yatra is

The Char Dham — literally "four abodes" — refers to the four Himalayan shrines in Uttarakhand: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Together they form one of Hinduism's most revered pilgrimage circuits, traditionally completed in a clockwise loop in that order.

The four dhams — what to expect

DhamDeityAltitudeSeason
YamunotriGoddess Yamuna3,293 mLate April–November
GangotriGoddess Ganga3,100 mLate April–November
KedarnathLord Shiva (Jyotirlinga)3,583 mEarly May–November
BadrinathLord Vishnu (Badri Vishal)3,133 mEarly May–November

Kedarnath has the most physically demanding access — a 16 km trek (or helicopter, or pony, or palki) from Gaurikund. The other three have road access right up to the temple complex (Yamunotri requires a final 6 km trek).

Step 1 — Register online (mandatory and free)

Since 2022, Uttarakhand requires every yatri (including children) to register before entering the dham zones.

  1. Visit registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in
  2. Click Yatra Registration
  3. Fill in: full name as per ID, age, gender, mobile, address, and medical fitness declaration
  4. Choose travel dates for each of the four dhams separately (you can pick different dates as you plan the loop)
  5. Upload a recent photo (under 1 MB)
  6. Submit — receive an e-Tourist Card with QR code

Print the card or save it to your phone. You'll be checked at every entry gate — Bhukhi, Sonprayag, Hanuman Chatti, etc.

Step 2 — Pick your route

Option A: Full road circuit (10–12 days)

Standard order, clockwise from Haridwar / Rishikesh:

  1. Haridwar → Barkot (220 km) — overnight stay
  2. Barkot → Yamunotri darshan → Barkot (full day; 6 km trek each way)
  3. Barkot → Uttarkashi (90 km)
  4. Uttarkashi → Gangotri darshan → Uttarkashi (full day)
  5. Uttarkashi → Sitapur / Gauri Kund (220 km)
  6. Kedarnath darshan (16 km trek or helicopter)
  7. Sitapur → Joshimath / Pipalkoti (190 km)
  8. Joshimath → Badrinath darshan → Joshimath (full day)
  9. Joshimath → Rishikesh / Haridwar (290 km)

Most yatris add a Mana Village visit (last village before Tibet) and Vasudhara waterfall trek as part of the Badrinath day.

Option B: Helicopter (1–2 nights)

The fastest route — helicopter shuttles run from Sahastradhara (Dehradun) for the full circuit. Same-day Kedarnath helicopter shuttles also run from Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi in Rudraprayag district.

Booking opens on heliyatra.irctc.co.in roughly 1–2 months before season opening. Slots are issued by lottery during peak demand.

Option C: Do Dham (Kedarnath + Badrinath only)

A 5–6 day shortened pilgrimage covering only the two most popular dhams. Common for time-constrained yatris.

Step 3 — Cost breakdown

Replace with verified current rates from registered operators before publishing.

ModePer person, all 4 dhamsIncludes
Budget (road, dharamshala)₹15,000–₹25,000Shared cab, dharamshala/GMVN guesthouse
Mid-range (road, hotels)₹35,000–₹60,000Private cab share, 3-star hotels, meals
Helicopter — Kedarnath only₹8,000–₹10,000 round tripPhata–Kedarnath shuttle
Helicopter — All 4 dhams₹1.7–₹2.5 lakhSahastradhara base, 2 nights

Excluded everywhere: pony / palki at Yamunotri and Kedarnath (₹2,000–₹6,000), pooja and donations, food on trek routes.

Step 4 — Health screening and fitness

Uttarakhand's mandatory Health Advisory & Screening since 2024:

  • Pulse oximetry, BP, and SpO2 at every dham entry gate
  • Yatris above 50 must carry a doctor's fitness certificate
  • Pre-existing cardiac, respiratory, or hypertension patients are advised against the Yamunotri and Kedarnath treks

Carry these in your day pack:

  • Diamox (acetazolamide) for altitude — start 24 hours before Kedarnath
  • BP / sugar medicines — at least 2 days extra supply
  • ORS sachets, glucose, dry fruits
  • Pulse oximeter (₹500 from chemists; useful at altitude)

Step 5 — Packing essentials

CategoryItems
DocumentsPrinted e-Tourist Card, Aadhaar, doctor's certificate (50+)
ClothingThermals, fleece, windproof jacket, raincoat, gloves, woolly cap
FootwearTrek shoes (broken in), 2 pairs warm socks, slip-ons for darshan
Trek gearWalking stick (₹50 at Gauri Kund), torch, raincoat
HealthPersonal meds, Diamox, ORS, sunscreen SPF 50+, lip balm
MiscPower bank, dry-bag for phone, ₹2,000 small notes for offerings

Tips from veteran yatris

  • Skip the pony at Kedarnath if you can walk — porters and mules cause delays and the trek itself is the meditation.
  • Stay overnight at Kedarnath if temple permission allows — early morning darshan with bhog before the crowds is unforgettable.
  • Mana village at Badrinath — visit Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa, and the last tea shop in India before Mana Pass.
  • Akshaya Tritiya darshan at Yamunotri is the most auspicious of the year, but extremely crowded — go later that month for calm.
  • Avoid weekend openings — long weekends draw road traffic that adds 6–8 hours to Sonprayag–Gauri Kund.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping registration — you'll be turned back at the gate
  • Booking helicopter from unofficial sites — only heliyatra.irctc.co.in is the official portal; everything else is a tout
  • Doing Kedarnath without acclimatization — overnight at Sonprayag (1,829 m) before the trek to 3,583 m
  • Rigid bookings on the road days — landslides happen; build a 1-day buffer
  • Plastic bottles — fine on the trek; banned at Kedarnath temple approach

After the yatra

Most yatris extend the trip with Auli (skiing in winter, alpine meadows in summer) or Hemkund Sahib (high-altitude Sikh shrine near Govindghat). The full Hemkund + Char Dham combo is sometimes called Panch Dham.

Bottom line

The Char Dham Yatra is no longer a wing-and-a-prayer trip — registration and helicopter slots are bookable online months ahead, and Uttarakhand Tourism's portal is functional. Do the registration, book stays before season opens, carry the medical certificate if you're 50+, and budget at least 10 days for the full road circuit. The mountains don't move; only your readiness does.

Frequently asked questions

Portals (kapaat) open on Akshaya Tritiya — Yamunotri and Gangotri first, followed by Kedarnath and Badrinath. The yatra typically runs from late April or early May through Bhai Dooj in early November. Confirm exact opening dates on registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in once announced.
