Documents you'll need
Carry one document each for Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) when applicable. UIDAI publishes the full accepted list on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. The most common accepted documents:
- PoI: PAN, passport, voter ID, driving licence, ration card with photo, pension card, government photo ID
- PoA: Bank passbook, electricity/water/gas bill (≤3 months old), registered rent agreement, voter ID, passport, ration card, driving licence
- DoB: Birth certificate, SSLC marksheet, passport, PAN
Documents must be self-attested. For online updates, scan in colour at under 2 MB per file.
How to update Aadhaar address online
Step 1: Visit the myAadhaar portal
Open myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in on any device. Click Login.
Step 2: Authenticate
Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number, the captcha, then the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
Step 3: Choose Update Aadhaar Online
From the dashboard, click Update Aadhaar Online. Tick Address and proceed.
Step 4: Enter the new address
Fill in the new house number, street, locality, district, state, and PIN. Compare carefully against your supporting document — even a small mismatch can lead to rejection.
Step 5: Upload your PoA document
Upload a coloured scan of one accepted address proof. File must be under 2 MB and in JPEG, PNG, or PDF.
Step 6: Pay ₹50
Pay using UPI, debit/credit card, or net banking. The fee is non-refundable even if the request is later rejected.
Step 7: Save the URN
You receive a 14-digit Update Request Number (URN). Save it. Track status at any time via the portal's Check Update Status option.
How to update mobile number (centre-only)
- Book an appointment at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra via appointments.uidai.gov.in (walk-ins accepted at most centres).
- Carry your physical Aadhaar (or e-Aadhaar print).
- Fill the Aadhaar Update / Correction Form with the new mobile number — no document is needed for mobile updates.
- Provide biometrics (fingerprint + iris) to authenticate.
- Pay ₹50 and collect the acknowledgement slip with URN.
Updates are typically reflected within 7–14 days.
How to track an Aadhaar update
- Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → Check Update Status
- Enter your 14-digit URN and Aadhaar number
- The status shows one of: In Progress, Completed, Rejected, or Document Re-upload Required
You can also call 1947 (toll-free) or email help@uidai.gov.in with your URN.
Common rejections and how to fix them
- Address mismatch with PoA — re-submit with a matching document or use the Address Validation Letter route
- Document unclear or cropped — re-upload a full, clear colour scan
- Document not self-attested — sign each page before scanning
- Document outside 3-month validity (for utility bills) — use a more recent bill
If rejected, the ₹50 fee is not refunded — you must pay again to re-submit.
Children's Aadhaar — mandatory biometric updates (MBU)
Aadhaar issued to children below 5 has no biometrics. Two free biometric updates are mandatory:
- Age 5–7: First MBU — fingerprints, iris, photo (free if done before age 7; ₹100 after)
- Age 15–17: Second MBU — fingerprints, iris, photo (free if done before age 17; ₹100 after)
These can only be done at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
Free document update reminder
UIDAI periodically runs free document update windows on the portal — even if your demographic data hasn't changed, you upload a fresh copy of PoI/PoA to keep your record current. Check the dashboard banner on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
Bottom line
For most people, the only Aadhaar update they ever do is address when they move — that's a 10-minute, ₹50, fully online job at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Everything that touches biometrics — mobile, photo, fingerprints — needs a physical visit. Plan accordingly, and keep your URN until the status shows Completed.
Frequently asked questions
No. Mobile number update requires a biometric visit to a UIDAI-authorised Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre. The fee is ₹50 and takes 5–10 minutes.
